How it works, and what to press

• Opening. Ctrl+O in any app, or drop a file onto its window. What each app opens is listed on the formats page, exactly, including what is read but not written.
• Saving. Ctrl+S writes the file back in the format it came in. A file that came in as OpenDocument goes out as OpenDocument; a .doc,.xls or .ppt is read but saved as its modern form, and the save dialog says so.
• Autosave and recovery. An unsaved document is copied into your profile every half minute. If the application or the machine goes down, the launcher offers the copy back by name the next time it starts.
• Deleting. Anything the suite deletes goes to the operating system’s trash, never straight to nothing.
• Printing. Ctrl+P prints, and the same dialog writes a PDF. Worksheets add fit-to-width, a print area and repeated rows; decks add notes pages and handouts.

IMAP and SMTP for the accounts you use now, and — the part no other free client does properly — the archives other clients leave behind. Outlook .pst and .ost are read in full: folders, messages, recipients and attachments, out of the node and block B-trees rather than through Outlook.

One address book behind the whole suite, so a name you have written to once is offered the next time you start typing it. A sender is kept from the reading pane in a click, and the file goes back out as vCard — the format every other client can read, so this is a place your contacts are held rather than a place they are trapped.

A spreadsheet with an actual calculation engine — parser, evaluator and dependency ordering — so a workbook recalculates in the right order rather than showing you the last values it was saved with. Excel’s ribbon, every tab and group; the drawings the file carries — shapes, pictures, charts — painted at the size their author drew them; text that spills over empty neighbours; a function list that is the engine’s own catalogue rather than a hand-typed one. A workbook that used to take eleven minutes to open now takes six seconds. A hyperlink is read with its target, underlined, followed with Ctrl+click and put on a cell with Ctrl+K, as Excel writes one; a note wears its red corner and tells itself on hover. Drag a column’s edge to size it and the fill handle to fill, as in Excel; a chart is drawn from the figures under the cursor and written the way Excel writes one.

The double-click app: every common image format, EXIF read and orientation honoured, clips and sound in the same folder, and PDFs in the same window. A folder fills the window — folders inside it, chips that count it by kind, any order, three tile sizes — and draws only what is in view, so a folder of five thousand costs what a folder of fifty costs. A tile is a thumbnail the platform made once and Rutba Office keeps, never the file itself; a clip’s tile is a frame of it, not a live player. One click opens a picture on a dark stage with a filmstrip, and the picture stays until the next has decoded, so moving on never shows an empty frame.

• When a release is found, every window says so at the bottom right, with the download’s progress. Once it is downloaded the card offers Restart and update, which quits, installs and comes back.
• Not now puts that version away for a day. If you simply carry on, it installs when you next quit — never while you are working.
• About → Check now always gets an answer, and the news page says what each release changed.
