Rutba Office vs Google Workspace

Documents, spreadsheets and slides that live in a browser, with mail and storage in the same subscription. The consumer tier is free; the business tiers are per user.

Ours is the free one, so read this knowing whose page you are on. What follows starts with where Google Workspace beats us, because on this page that is the part you cannot get from them.

First, honestly

Where Google Workspace wins

Not a courtesy paragraph. Each of these is a real reason to choose them over us.

  • Collaboration is the product

Several people in one document with no merge step and no file to send. Nothing desktop-first competes with this, and it is the reason most teams are there.

  • Nothing to install or update

It runs on any machine with a browser, including the ones you do not administer.

  • Search and sharing across everything

One place, one identity, one search box, on every device you sign in on.

And ours

Where Rutba Office wins

  • Your files stay files

A .docx imported to Docs becomes a Google document and comes back converted. Here a .docx is opened, edited and saved as the same .docx — the parts we did not touch return byte-for-byte.

  • It works with the network off

Not a limited offline mode for recently opened files. All seven apps, all features, no connection.

  • Nothing is uploaded

The documents never leave the machine, because there is nowhere for them to go.

Side by side

The seven structural questions

Asked of desktop office suites. A component and a desktop suite are not decided on the same seven, so each group has its own.

QuestionRutba OfficeGoogle Workspace

Microsoft formatsReads and writes .docx, .xlsx and .pptxYesPartly
Mail includedA mail client in the same suite, not a separate downloadYesYes

These seven are the questions this project was built to answer, so of course it answers them. Feature depth, maturity, collaboration and support contracts are not on this table, and Google Workspace beats us on at least one of those.

Verdict

Who should choose which

If your team lives in shared documents, this suite is not trying to replace that and would be a downgrade. Use it for the work that should stay on one machine, and for the formats that should survive a round trip untouched.

It costs nothing to find out

Install it beside whatever you use now — a normal per-user install, a normal uninstall.
