Rutba Office vs WPS Office
A proprietary office suite with a free tier and paid upgrades, a familiar ribbon interface, a connected cloud account, and apps on every platform including mobile.
Ours is the free one, so read this knowing whose page you are on. What follows starts with where WPS Office beats us, because on this page that is the part you cannot get from them.
First, honestly
Where WPS Office wins
Not a courtesy paragraph. Each of these is a real reason to choose them over us.
It feels like the thing people already use
The interface is close enough to Microsoft Office that most people need no retraining, which is a real and underrated advantage.
PDF tools and mobile apps
A capable PDF editor and genuine phone and tablet applications, neither of which this suite has.
Good OOXML fidelity
Years of work on rendering the Microsoft formats accurately, and it shows.
And ours
Where Rutba Office wins
The free tier is the whole product
Theirs is a tier: features, storage and prompts sit behind an upgrade and a cloud account. Ours has no paid version to be steered towards.
You can read the source
Proprietary against AGPL. Every privacy claim we make is checkable in the repository; theirs has to be taken on trust.
Nothing is connected
No account, no cloud, no sync — which is the point for some people and irrelevant to others.
Side by side
The seven structural questions
Asked of desktop office suites. A component and a desktop suite are not decided on the same seven, so each group has its own.
| Question | Rutba Office | WPS Office |
|---|---|---|
| FreeUsable in full, at work, without paying | Yes | Partly |
| Works offlineEverything functions with the network off | Yes | Partly |
| No accountUsable without signing in to anything | Yes | Partly |
| Microsoft formatsReads and writes .docx, .xlsx and .pptx | Yes | Yes |
| Mail includedA mail client in the same suite, not a separate download | Yes | No |
| Outlook archivesOpens .pst and .ost files | Yes | No |
| Source publishedYou can read and change the code | Yes | No |
These seven are the questions this project was built to answer, so of course it answers them. Feature depth, maturity, collaboration and support contracts are not on this table, and WPS Office beats us on at least one of those.
Verdict
Who should choose which
If the familiar ribbon and the mobile apps are what you need, take theirs. Take ours if "free" mattering permanently, and nothing phoning home, are what you are actually buying.

Compared with each other, not with us
We are not in these. They are the same two questions asked without our thumb on the scale.
